Welcome

Picture Dr Caroline Denigan
Hello, welcome to www.theia.co the website of the House of Theia.

At the House of Theia we offer guided personal development services. These services support you to express yourself, build on your strengths and explore your own journey through female centered spirituality.

Our services do this by assisting you to:
  • Develop meditative practices
  • Build knowledge and skills in transformative ritual
  • Learn and refine crafting skills to support your spiritual journey
  • Find devotional objects to help focus your practice.
  • Explore ways to create personal spaces that support you to be the person you want to be
  • Use astrological charts to develop greater self awareness and insight into relationships.

Who is theia?

Theia was a Goddess of great power in the Greek archaic period. Her various names and qualities were listed as the light of the blue sky, sight, seeing, divine inspiration and phophecy or vision. She was credited as being the daughter of Gaia (the Earth) and Mother of Helios (the Sun), Selene (the Moon) and Eos (the Dawn).

Our personal development service is named after this ancient European Goddess for several reasons. Firstly, by recalling the existence of ancient Goddesses, who reigned for millenia before written history, we are able to explore ideas of females as strong, knowledgable, and embodying what is sacred. We learn to see ourselves and other females as smart, strong, whole, autonomous and of value. We aim to contradict the negative stereotypes mainstream and social media pass on about female embodiment. Developing more positive ideas of female embodiment is important to individuals, communities and to society as a whole.

Naming our service after Theia we underscore what can be learned from females, whether they be our grandmothers, mothers, aunts, sisters, daughters, granddaughters or friends. Theia.co affirms the place of females in society at all levels, in all roles. We are: prime ministers, taxi drivers, principals, farmers, directors, athletes, journalists, professors, truck drivers, electricians, students, builders, parents, nurses, process workers and bankers. Our primary focus is to provide opportunities for females to find and affirm their strength and knowledge in a safe, supportive environment.

In its name we also recall one of the foremothers of Goddess spirituality in Australia, thea Gaia. Thea was an early leader in the movement to rediscover the Goddess in Australia, she lead many workshops and presentations around the country and inspired generations of us to learn and grow in strength, through Goddess. Thea's legacy lives on in the hearts of many.

Introducing the House of Theia

At the House of Theia we work as collegium, a community where all are equal. Our teachers, facilitators and artists have a wealth of teaching and training experience and ethics that you can trust. Our philosophies and practices support inclusion and diversity and promote cultural safety. While some of our offerings are only open to females, others are open to all participants.

Females have particular needs due to being raised in a culture where violence against them and sex based discrimination are prevalent. Females with disabilities, young, indigenous and migrant females experience violence at much higher rates and presents barriers to living life as they may choose. Indeed some violence leaves people with disabilities and trauma that prevent them from being able to participate in mixed sex groups.  We cater to those people buy providing some single sex groups and workshops.

Not only do we cater to a wide range of needs but we also work to include people as broadly as possible by undermining practices like racism. In Western tradition light and dark are often discussed as a 'hierarchical dualism', a pair of opposed concepts, one associated with positive characteristics and the other negative. Such value systems are behind many problematic patterns of Western thought such as racism, abelism, ageism and sexism. At theia.co we cultivate awareness of cultural practices that cause social divisions and result in inequality and oppression, in order to avoid them. We must know our history if we hope to avoid reliving it.

Explorations of light and dark, consciousness of their dance, inform our work. That knowledge features in our transformative ritual, group meditations and crafting workshops. Our workshop series on the Moon, for example, focuses on the interplay of the light moon and the dark moon and uncovers hidden knowledge revealed only to those who take the time to observe the moon's journey closely.

Meet our founder

The House of Theia was developed by Dr Caroline Denigan. Through the House of Theia Caroline synthesized practices developed in her professional roles as teacher, celebrant, artist, researcher and her work in women's health promotion. This unique professional history has equiped Caroline to offer personal development opportunities framed in a multidisciplinary approach. She combines craft and ritual, esoteric tradition and academic rigor to deliver memorable workshops, performances and readings.

Dr Denigan first experimented with textiles as a young child. The family traditions of tailoring and dressmaking allowed her access to materials and equipment with which she experimented and developed her creativity. She made matching outfits for her dolls and at eight years old made her first dress. Her design and construction skills were developed over many years culminating in the completion of a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture and a Bachelor of Architecture.

At fourteen Caroline started studying astrology. She calculated her own natal chart long hand with the now tattered copy of Brian Innes' book; Horoscopes: How to Draw and Interpret Them. These days she uses computer based resources and has developed her own guides to astrology to empower others to read and interpret their own charts. Her interest in interactions between the natural world and human spirituality that led her to paganism and witchcraft; with 22 years experience she is currently Australia's longest serving witch/Pagan Religious Marriage Celebrant. Her celebrancy practice is proudly non-discriminating.

Caroline's teaching and research skills were honed at Deakin University, The University of Adelaide and while teaching Women's and Gender Studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder (USA). She taught courses that focused on development, women's health and globalization. Her teaching was grounded in her own international advocacy on women and housing, knowledge developed while working on women's health at Barwon Health and lived experience of disability. Her doctoral research, focused on female embodiment and the experience of women building their own houses.
